MASTS is an interdisciplinary group of faculty and students across USC and beyond who see media systems as messy mixes of people and technology -- and who want reshape those relationships to serve public interests.
We trace the people who make media systems, the values and assumptions that drive them, the power that they and their systems have, how that power is distributed, and how it might be reimagined, regulated, and reshaped. Through both research projects and social relationships, we envision and work to create alternative media systems that can help us navigate and transform today's polycrisis.
Everyone is welcome to join our group. Our only two rules are (1) that you be generous, gracious, and patient with yourselves and others who are exploring new and perhaps unfamiliar ways of knowing and acting, and (2) that you are committed to working in ways that are rigorous, sophisticated, and playful -- and that move us all beyond academia's standard silos.
